It is one of the most well known and modernist theatres in Latin America. It is part of the theatre complex of Buenos Aires, which depends on the "porteño" government.
It was opened in 1944 with the name of "Teatro Municipal;" in 1950 it was renamed as the "General San Martín" and in 1954 the current building construction started, finishing in 1960. The construction of 13 floors and 4 basements is built in reinforced concrete, crystals, and metal works. The San Martín has three halls -among the most prestigious of the city-, a cinema where seasons of movies are shown, (generally non-commercial movies,) many halls for exhibitions, and a picture gallery of 300 square meters. It also has a dramatic arts school, and set design, properties, costumes, and special effects workshops, among others. It has two stable casts: the Contemporary Ballet and the "Titiriteros" group, both national precursors.
