It was built for the newspaper "La Prensa." Nowadays it houses the "Casa de la Cultura" of the government of Buenos Aires. It is one of the most luxurious buildings of the 19th Century.
The construction was entrusted by José C. Paz, founder of La Prensa, to a Parisian architect's studio. The project envisaged sectors for each step of a newspaper production process, including the printing and the distribution. The design was completed and executed in Buenos Aires by architects Alberto Gainza and Carlos Agote. The building of six floors and two basements is structured around a main patio. It was equipped with the latest technology from the period: an internal communication system of pneumatic tubes, telephones, transmitters, and cable news receivers.
The first sample of La Prensa appeared in 1869. In the first half of the 20th Century, La Prensa was the most popular newspaper of the country, with correspondents in all the provinces, in all the continent capitals, in most of the European countries, and other nations.
